About Us

The ALC is a fully incorporated, not-for-profit, registered charity (#10668-6298) whose membership is made up of volunteers or supporting members. The affairs of the Council are managed by a Board of nine volunteer directors. The Board of Directors meets the second Wednesday of each month.

The Adult Literacy Council of Greater Fort Erie (ALC) was founded in November 1978 to provide help in basic reading, writing and math for members of the community who were no longer in the school system. The first tutor training workshop was held in January 1979 and since that time volunteer tutors have been matched with learners on an ongoing basis.

This organization is part of the Laubach Literacy International, which was founded by Dr. Frank Laubach in 1955. Dr. Laubach developed a method of reading instruction that has been used in over 100 countries. This phonics-based reading program is used as a core series for teaching the basic skills involved in reading and writing. The ALC also utilizes other methods of instruction based on the individual needs of the learners.
